What is the AI Modern-Day Ancestors?
The Modern-Day Ancestors template takes an old family photograph, the kind of stiff sepia studio portrait from about a hundred years ago, and re-shoots it as if it were taken today. The same people stay in the same positions, with the same faces, ages and poses, even the same chair. What changes is everything around them: present-day hairstyles and grooming, smart-casual 2020s clothing with natural creases, a bright modern living room or daylight studio, true colour and the crisp detail of a modern camera. No sepia, no scratches, no card mount.
Seeing great-grandparents as if they were people you might pass in the street became a popular AI post on Reddit and other platforms in October 2026. The effect is surprisingly moving: without the costume of the era, the family resemblance jumps out.
Upload a scan or a phone photo of the print. Faces should be visible; tiny faces in a large group give the model less to work with. The template tells the model not to beautify, slim or de-age anyone and to keep bone structure, eyes, brows, ears and facial hair identical. It is an artistic reimagining, not a restoration. The result arrives in about 20 to 40 seconds as a 4:3 photo. The example on this page uses a fictional AI-generated family.
Reimagining, not restoring
This template creates a new photo of the same people in a modern setting. It does not repair the original, and some details, like clothing and background, are invented on purpose. Facial features are kept as close as the model can manage, but small differences are normal, especially when the original faces are tiny or faded.
If you want to keep the original look and just clean it up, the AI photo enhancer template sharpens and restores a photo instead.
Old photos and privacy
Old family photos often include people who can no longer be asked, so use some care. Share results with relatives first, label them as AI reimaginings, and do not present them as real photographs.
Your upload is stored in Firebase Storage under your account, is not public, and can be deleted on request. To run the effect, a copy goes to our model provider, kie.ai, which keeps result files for 14 days.
