What is the AI 80s Photo (1985 Me)?
The 1985 Me template answers one question: what would you have looked like in a snapshot from 1985? Upload a selfie and you get a candid three-quarter photo of yourself leaning on a boxy 80s car, a wall or a wood-panelled living room, with big voluminous hair, period grooming and mid-80s clothes like an acid-wash denim jacket, a colour-block windbreaker, shoulder pads or a loud patterned shirt. The look is a cheap point-and-shoot: harsh on-camera flash, a hard shadow behind you, warm punchy print colours, heavy grain, slightly soft focus, and an orange digital date stamp in the corner reading '85.
The AI 80s photo trend swept social media in September 2026, especially in India, where it became so widespread that police publicly reminded people to be careful which apps they upload their faces to. That is good advice: check where your photo goes before you use any AI app.
The template keeps your face, age and skin tone and tells the model not to beautify or slim you, and it keeps facial hair if you have it. Styling follows your gender presentation. Results take about 20 to 40 seconds as a 3:4 photo. Examples on this page were made from AI-generated fictional people.
What makes it look like 1985
Clothes and hair are only half of it. Real 80s snapshots look the way they do because of the cameras and film: a direct flash that blows out faces a little and throws a hard shadow, warm Kodacolor-style prints with strong reds and teals, lifted blacks, heavy grain, soft focus and wear around the edges from years in an album. The template writes all of that in, plus the glowing date stamp that 80s cameras printed in the corner.
The setting is kept free of modern objects, so there are no phones or flat screens in the frame.
Check where you upload your face
When the trend went viral, authorities warned that some apps riding on it could misuse photos. It is a fair warning for any AI service. On Soracai, your upload is stored under your account in Firebase Storage, it is not public, and you can ask support to delete it. To run the effect, a copy goes to our model provider, kie.ai, which keeps result files for 14 days.
Only upload your own photo, or one of someone who agreed.
